Obviously, there are limitations with any web based pedigree lookup service.  They can't provide the speed and features of a desktop pedigree program.  The flexibility and appearance of their printed pedigrees will never be matched by html pages.  Desktop programs are still required to do COI calculations, enter and view additional data fields, display genetic risk factors, search and sort data fields, list dogs owned or bred by an individual and keep track of expenses and breeding records.

In the past, the problem with having your own pedigree program was entering the database and keeping it current.

All of the on-line pedigree databases hosted by K9-Ped can be downloaded and viewed for free using K9-Ped.  Many other "starter" databases are also available.  Download the demo version with no database from http://k9ped.com/download.html and the desired breed database from  http://k9ped.com/breeds.html.  Install the program.  After you install the program but before you run it the first time, unzip the breed database into the c:\k9ped\backup folder.  Run the program and select the unzipped breed file.

Along with all of the functions listed above, in demo mode you can even add a few of your own dogs and print their pedigrees.  What can't you do?  You can't enter more than a few dogs, backup and restore the database,  input or output text files and you are restricted to a single breed database.

Currently using another pedigree program?  Database conversions from most popular programs are available.  Successful database recoveries have even been done from very old DOS programs that used dBase ".dbf" files.
