The latest version of K9-Ped will directly import CompuPedTM version 4.x files(*.crc, *.cow and *.cms), TBSTM BXF files and BreedmateTM XML files. This import feature is available in both full licensed or demo mode.
If you are using CompuPedTM and tired of waiting for a full release of a windows version then K9-Ped may be the answer, You can move up to K9-Ped and use your CompuPedTM data. The low initial cost and free upgrades make K9-Ped a great alternative to upgrading to CompuPedTM Millennium (Perhaps it should be Millennium Plus Three)
In demo mode, empty the current database (Options | Breed Names | Empty Current Database), exit the program and restart K9-Ped. Click "File | Import from other Pedigree programs.". Licensed users should create a new breed and click this button on the "File | Restore Backup File" page.

Q: Why should I consider to K9-Ped?
Q: How do I
import my data from other programs?
Q: Do I have to buy the program to see if it will properly convert my data to K9-Ped format?
A: No. You can import one breed at a time in demo mode. Demo mode is restricted to a single breed and the number of additional dogs is limited. Imports, exports, generating web database files and backups are also disabled in demo mode.
Q: My names are all uppercase. Do I have to to keep using uppercase names to avoid duplicates?
A: K9-Ped will not allow duplicate names that only differ in spacing, capitalization or punctuation. "Duplicate" names in your other program's database that only differ in spacing, capitalization or Punctuation will have a number added at the end during the import process. i.e. SALLY'S DOG & SALLYS DOG (2).
Q: Where does K9-Ped store the *.crc data?
A: The Pedigree Data, sex, date of birth, titles and registration number are stored in these data fields. The other data fields are stored as follows:
Awards are placed in the "Post-Title" field.Q: Where does K9-Ped store the *.cms data?
Color = Data Field 4.
Stud Book = Data Field 1.
Errata = Data Field 9.
The second date field (Date of Death") = Data Field 2.
The third date field (Champion date?) = Data Field 5.
To help reference your original data the CompuPedTM record number is placed in field 10.
The fourth date field is used for the "Data In" while the "Source In" is set to your data file name.
A: The *.cms data file data are stored in the fields accessed on the "More Data" page. These fields are in the same order as the data fields in CompuPedTM. In addition one of these fields can assigned to Data Field 3 (Call name) on the main page.
Q. How about the Owner & Breeder names?
A: K9-Ped is designed to use individual names. This allows you to view the dogs owned or bred by an individual rather than by the various exact combinations of individuals. The program tries to split the combined names into individual names. This process is never 100% accurate as many combined names have ambiguous meanings. For example is "Barbara Lee & John Smith" = "Barbara Lee Smith" & "John Smith" or is it "Barbara Lee" and "John Smith". If the program fails to split all of your names properly it is easy to change all occurrences of a name to a different name or even to two different names.
Q: I hate 'S names not being with "S" names. If I use mixed case names will my data sort correctly?
A: Yes. K9-Ped sorts data based on a single case name without spaces or punctuation. You can select the options of changing your data to mixed case during import or make the changes later.
Q: I want to use different fields for the data. Can I change them?
A: K9-Ped includes a function to swap or move data between fields. (See "Edit | Swap Data Between Two Fields") The only limitation is the main data fields are 20 characters and the More Data fields are 32 characters. Moving a "More Data" field to a main data field will truncate any data to 29 characters.
Q: I have spent a lot of time calculating COI values. Will K9-Ped import these values.
A: No. I have heard from many users that COI values calculated by different programs can differ significantly. Much of this discussion related to programs now owned by the same company. Many programs require COI values to be individually calculated and stored. Despite various claims of having the fastest COI calculations using proprietary algorithms, most are actually quite slow. K9-Ped recalculates both the progeny count and the 4, 6, 8 and 10 generation COI values and displays them on the main page every time you view a dog. This takes about 1/4 of a second. Precalculated COI values are only required if you want to sort the database by COI values or include this information in multi-dog reports. K9-Ped will calculate and store these four values (COI-4 > 10) for every dog in the database at 500 to 2,000 dogs per minute depending on the average number of generations of data and the speed of your system. Only the very largest databases will take more than an hour. COI values based on less than complete data are shown as negative values.
Q: K9-Ped has so much information on the main screen. Doesn't that slow down data input? Can you reduce the number of fields shown on the main screen?
A: No, but you can "disable" fields. During data entry the Tab or Enter key moves to the next enabled field. You can define, save and use multiple "patterns" with different field orders and enabled fields. For example you might define a pattern for Stud Book entry that only stops at the fields with Stud Book data and moves through the fields in the same order as the data is presented in the Stud Book. Another pattern might match the show catalog data and order. Disabled fields can always be selected with the mouse.
Q: Does K9-Ped have any single character fields for genetic disease codes?
A: Yes and no. Genetic disease values are represented by the first character in the code (A= affected, C= Carrier, P = produced, etc.) K9-Ped has three permanent genetic disease fields. In addition, any of the other 30 fields can be temporarily set to be a genetic disease field. When you enter an affected dog the program will propagate this information and mark the parents as producers and the progeny as carriers. Data is only propagated when the value is "less" than existing data. P never overwrite C and C never overwrites A or P. The second letter is set to a P to indicate the data was propagated by the program. Most users use the last letter (Second letter for entered data, third letter for propagate data) to indicate the source. AO could mean Affected and listed on the Open Registry. CPO would then indicate the data was propagated from a parent on the Open Registry. A graphic display of risk factors is available by clicking the button to the left of the genetic codes values on the main screen.
Q: What other calculations are available?
A: K9-Ped will calculate the % of blood and the individual COI for every ancestor for up to 30 generations. COI is the probability that both sides of any gene pair came for any one dog. The individual COI is the probability that both sides of any gene pair came from a particular dog. This list can be sorted by name, blood percentage or individual COI. Highlighting a dog will display the number of times the dog appears in the pedigree by side and generation.
K9-Ped will display the database sorted by any field. You can search using wild cards and boolean logic.
Q: How many different titles can I use?
A: K9-Ped does not have any limit on the number of different titles you use. It can set to drop down a list of all previously used titles. Entering a new title adds it to the list. Individual "Titles" can be marked as not being titles to avoid printing the dog in color on pedigrees. Pre-Titles like OTCH can be set as performance titles for color printing. Conformation champions (pre-title) print in red, performance champions (post-title) print in blue while dual champions print in purple. These colors are user selectable. Existing titles can be changes in batch mode using the "Edit | Work With Titles" page. For example all AmCanCH titles could be changed to Am Can Ch.
Q: What if my data doesn't import properly?
A: To say the least, some programs use some very unique methods for storing data. Considerable effort has gone into determining the location of the various data elements. Since this was done using databases that did not use all of the possible fields there could be some missing fields. If you have any difficulties please send a zip file containing your data and samples of missing or incorrect data. Your data will only be used to improve the import function and will never be shared with others without your expressed permission.
Q: Why should I change to K9-Ped? Why not just upgrade to a new version of my existing program?
A: If you are faced with changing from a DOS based program to a 32-bit Windows based program you will have to purchase an upgrade and learn a new program. This is a great opportunity to consider at least trying an alternative. If you are using CompuPedTM an upgrade to the new windows version may in fact represent a vendor change. MBFSTM is the new owner of CompuPedTM and the supplier of "The Breeders StandardTM". K9-Ped offers a free demo version. Other programs offer (limited time?) trial versions. Try them both before you make your decision.
Q: Are there different "levels" of K9-Ped? I don't need the Professional version.
No. K9-Ped only has one version. There are no restriction on the number of breeds or the number of dogs per breed. It is more work to maintain multiple versions and therefore the overall cost would have to increase. The $99.00 price is about the same as some of the upgrades offered by other vendors. With free upgrades the long term cost may be less than even the lowest cost version.
Q: Why should I consider K9-Ped?
